Scary Day

Well, I must say that I am not very happy with the nurses that we have had the past two days. It seems that whenever my dad needs anything, he pushes the nurse button, it takes them 5 minutes to respond, and then another 45 minutes before his nurse shows up. Now I understand that my dad isn't the nurses' only patient, but at this hospital each nurse only has 2 or 3 patients. The nurse that we had this afternoon was especially horrible. She didn't know what she was doing at all. My dad's breathing was dropping dramatically, he had a fever, and his heart rate was rising rapidly. She didn't even notice.(even after we told her!) There were 3 different beeping noises that were going off as well as a blinking light outside his door. She didn't even care. she seemed as if nothing was wrong and left the room again. Luckily the doctor had stopped by and had noticed the situation. He immediately ran out of the room very angry, and when he came back he had a trail of nurses following behind him. The doctor ordered everyone out of the room, and he began working. He had to fix a lot of things that the nurse seemed to miss. The doctor wanted to place my dad back in ICU to hopefully stabilize him as well as keep a better watch on him. (my mom and I have noticed that they have much better nurses down there) They also wanted to shock his heart in order to stabilize it and getting beating at a normal pace again. All the ICU rooms were full, so the doctor did his best in my dad's current room. I honestly don't know exactly what happened in the room while the doctor was there, due to the evacuation, but his fever has gone down, his heart rate is back to normal, and his breathing is slowly getting better. Since this escapade, my dad has received a little bit better care from the nurse and the doctor is doing his best to step in as often as he can in between other things. My dad is doing better now, and is much more stable, other than the bleeding that we just discovered from his incision, and his continuous vomiting. He is getting a new nurse at 7. We can only hope that she is better than the last.

Best of luck! It's crummy when health care isn't as good as it should be. It seems to hit home even more when someone you love is the one receiving sub-standard care (even if it's just from one person).

I'm sorry it's been a tough day! Hopefully things will improve with the nursing care your father receives now that the doctor is aware of the situation.

We love you guys and are praying for you all!
